The Tyranny of Merit: A Discussion with Michael Sandel
August 23 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm CDT
Elite universities are often seen as meritocratic institutions that enable students to rise as far as their effort and talents will take them. Is this the case, or does the intense competition for admission reproduce privilege? If everyone had a truly equal chance to compete, would the winners deserve their admission? Should success in life depend on attending an elite college or university? Is meritocracy a remedy for inequality or a justification of it?
On August 23rd, USHCA’s student-led forum will return to discuss these questions raised by Michael Sandel, renowned Harvard professor, in his book The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good?
