On December 14th, 2023, USHCA hosted the virtual event “The Importance of Student Interchange in a Post-COVID World,” co-hosted by International Student Conferences.

This student event featured unique insights from students in our community as well as select perspectives from representatives in international education policy to facilitate dialogue on the realities of U.S.-China student interchange. The Role of Chinese Students in America

On December 5, 2023, USCET hosted a webinar on The Role of Chinese Students in America in partnership with USHCA. This event showcased four distinguished Americans, including USHCA Executive Director Min Fan, who began their journey in the U.S. as international students from China, alongside event host USCET President Madelyn Ross. The discussion highlighted themes that emerged from USCET’s recently published report, Three Decades of Chinese Students in America, 1991-2021, developed in partnership with the China Data Lab of the UC San Diego 21st  Century China Center. The panelists, who came to the U.S. in different decades, personify the contributions made by former Chinese students to their adopted country.

2023 Fall Third Space Story Circle

On Thursday, October 26th, 2023, USHCA hosted its Third Space Story Circle program, in tandem with back-to-school spirit. This Student Event centered around themes such as belonging, identity, and cross-cultural understanding. Now that we are living in a “post-pandemic” world, this Story Circle encouraged students in our community to assess what has changed for them in the past few years and challenge them to consider how international events like a global pandemic can bring us closer together. The event was open to English and Chinese speaking students from all corners of the globe.

FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO A 4-YEAR DEGREE, A PATH WITH MANY BENEFITS

Learn about the immediate and long-term benefits of a community-college education, and how this path can provide a better opportunity to be accepted to a higher-ranked college/university from which the student will receive their diploma. Hear from 3 excellent U.S. community colleges and the transfer officials from some of the 4-year universities they each provide a pathway to. Students who attended community college before transferring to a 4-year college will talk about their experiences. A Q&A will provide the opportunity to ask questions of the community colleges, transfer officials, and students. Based upon interest, a virtual fair with the opportunity to personally meet with various community colleges will be offered as a follow-up. Brought to you by the United States Heartland China Association, which fosters and supports a positive, productive, and mutually beneficial relationship between the United States and China by promoting exchanges in culture, education, and business.

2021 Presidential Youth Leadership Initiative Reflection

During the summer of my freshman year at college, I was taking a career preparation course and the instructor asked all of us a novel and provoking question: “What’s your epitaph after death?” I thought twice and gave my answer: “To burn passion for an admirable cause.” This answer aligns with the goal I chose before entering the college, which refers to a sentence from a Chinese writer Zhiyuan Xu: “Students learn from the books in the high school. When they enter the college, they should broaden their vision and learn from everywhere.”
