SUMMARY:De-Risk of the U.S.-China Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in the early 1990’s\, the US Government actively encouraged the development and growth of a relationship with China. These policies were supported by the interests of both American businesses and academics.  In addition to direct economic interest\, that relationship was driven by the expectation that robust economic ties would lead to “convergence” of the two economies through intensive economic and cultural engagement. \nIn recent years\, the two nations have not become much alike and today confront growing tensions in their relationship. These tensions have reached a sufficient level for policymakers and government officials to argue in favor of “de-risk” or the termination of the mutually beneficial economic relationship to contain China’s growth particularly in high tech regime and global leadership. Advocates for de-risk have become increasingly vocal and enjoy great support in the US Congress and Administration. \nThe US now faces a major policy challenge to surrender to pressure to end or limit the US-China economic relationship or to continue along the current path to continue to secure the substantial economic benefits and\, possibly\, mitigate future conflict through continued shared interest. \nWe have three speakers who will discuss various issues related to the possible de-risk of the US- China relationship as the two nations enter a period of intense competition. \n\nEd Monser\, a business practitioner\, will talk about business impact of the de-risk of the US-China relationship.\nJoel Glassman\, a retired international education administrator and political scientist who specializes in US-China relations\, will speak about the foreign policy and national security challenges confronting China and the US.\nHung-Gay Fung will talk about implications of the trade and investment policies in recent years that give rise to triggering the de-risk of the US-China relationship.

Is meritocracy a remedy for inequality or a justification of it? \nOn August 23rd\, USHCA’s student-led forum will return to discuss these questions raised by Michael Sandel\, renowned Harvard professor\, in his book The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good?

DESCRIPTION:Chinese-Americans play an important role in the U.S.-China relationship. Understanding who we are as a country is a crucial first step to the U.S. building a better Way Forward with China. Literally and metaphorically\, the infrastructure of our Heartland region is built on the backs of Chinese-Americans – a sociological history that has been largely ignored. \nBut how have we gotten here as a country? Who are the Chinese-Americans in the Heartland region and how did they get where they are today? How does a better understanding of our nation and our history impact our relationships abroad? All of these questions and more will be discussed with Dr. Huping Ling and the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago in a special USHCA Author Series event this February.

DESCRIPTION:Three members of the USHCA’s leadership had the honor to be invited to a small “old friends” reception to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco on November 18\, 2023\, the same day that President Biden and President Xi met on the sidelines of the APEC meetings. Following that small gathering\, the USHCA representatives then joined close to 200 guests from around the U.S. to attend an exclusive dinner at which President Xi delivered a significant speech in which he shared China’s openness to cooperation and posed a crucial question: “Are we partners or are we adversaries?” \nThe Biden-Xi meeting and the special reception and dinner on that day have led to many recent positive developments in U.S.-China relations. In this webinar\, Susan Thornton\, USHCA Vice-Chair\, and one of the leading American experts on China\, will lead a discussion about the 2024 prospects for U.S.-China ties based on their takeaways from the San Francisco meetings and their other interactions with U.S. and Chinese counterparts.

SUMMARY:New Horizons: Navigating US-China Educational Exchanges
DESCRIPTION:Since the normalization of US-China bilateral relationship 45 years ago\, educational exchanges have brought many benefits to both countries. Even though the pandemic and geopolitical tensions have significantly hindered two-way exchanges during the last three years\, the overall environment is improving. Last November\, leaders of both countries reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting people-to-people exchange at their meeting in San Francisco\, where Chinese President Xi Jinping boldly announced the goal of welcoming 50\,000 American students to visit China in the next 5 years. SUMMARY:Green Alliances: Cultivating US and Chinese Climate Leadership
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. China Agriculture Roundtable has grown to be the most broad-based bilateral dialogue platform around agriculture\, drawing leaders spanning government\, trade\, business\, education\, and think tanks from both countries. \nThe upcoming 4th annual Roundtable will further strengthen bilateral collaboration and people-to-people friendships around agriculture. We are excited that two leading experts\, Dr. Jennifer Turner and Dr. Karen Mancl of the Wilson Center will be joining us for our 2024 Think Tank Dialogue in Beijing on June 12th. The Wilson Center and the Ohio State University recently published a report to illustrate the complex climate footprint of U.S. and Chinese agriculture and highlight opportunities for bilateral cooperation on policies\, projects\, and strategies to reduce agriculture’s climate footprint. \nAt this talk\, Dr. Turner and Dr. Mancl will discuss possible paths forward for climate and food collaboration between the United States and China. We will also hear from leading professionals in agrifood sciences and agricultural studies.
