SUMMARY:China's Foreign Policy Deep Dive 1
DESCRIPTION:View the replay link here– \nThe U.S. and China share very different historical backgrounds in terms of challenges\, growth\, and philosophy\, including very different geographical perspectives that have played a large part in each country’s trajectory. How do these historical perspectives impact the U.S. and China’s current foreign policies when engaging in international topics like the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the continuing COVID-19 crisis? This April\, the USHCA will partner with the World Affairs Council of St. Louis to explore how these issues impact current foreign policy and contemporary issues between the U.S. and China. \nThis event will feature special panelists Governor Bob Holden\, Chairman & CEO of the U.S. Heartland China Association\, USHCA Strategic Advisor Ambassador Kenneth Quinn\, former Ambassador to Cambodia\, and Board Member Ms. Susan Thornton a retired senior U.S. diplomat with almost three decades of experience with the U.S. State Department in Eurasia and East Asia. She is currently a Senior Fellow and Visiting Lecturer in Law at the Yale Law School Paul Tsai China Center. \n

SUMMARY:Far East Deep South Broadcast
DESCRIPTION:Far East Deep South broadcasts on the WORLD Channel documentary series America ReFramed on Tuesday\, September 14th\, 2021\, 8:00 p.m. EDT (check local listings). It will also be available to stream on WORLDchannel.org\, PBS.org and the PBS Video app beginning at time of broadcast on September 14 through October 14. \nIn a nation that is in need of stories of hope\, Far East Deep South is a deeply moving documentary that offers a poignant perspective on race relations\, immigration and the deep roots of Chinese Americans in our national identity. The award-winning documentary follows Charles Chiu and his family (including his son\, producer Baldwin Chiu\, and daughter-in-law\, director Larissa Lam) as they travel from California to Mississippi to find answers about Charles’ father\, K.C. Lou. A retired Air Force reservist\, Charles was left behind in China as a baby and is reluctant to discuss his family’s complicated past with his sons\, Baldwin and Edwin. SUMMARY:The End of Globalization?
DESCRIPTION:Our Oct. 7 Great Decisions Lecture Series will ask the question if we are at the end of globalization. With David Dollar of Brookings. \nAbout this event\nA recent survey of nearly 20\,000 people in 25 countries reveals mixed enthusiasm for international trade and the globalization of goods and services\, with slightly less than half of those surveyed agreeing that globalization is a net-positive for their country. \nWith an uptick in protectionist trade rhetoric and reconsideration of globally integrated networks of goods and services\, what do the trends and forecasts indicate about the future of globalization? Is globalization really at an end\, or is it in need of a refresh? \nDavid Dollar\, noted economist and senior fellow in the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution\, will offer his insights in this virtual discussion jointly presented by the US Heartland China Association and the International Relations Council. \n  \nRegister Today.\nOctober 7th\, 2021\n6:30 – 7:30 p.m. CT

SUMMARY:HAINAN: CHINA'S HAWAII AND WORLD'S LARGEST FREE TRADE ZONE
DESCRIPTION:Is Hainan the next Singapore?  Or a newer and bigger one? Questions like these have been bubbling up ever since Hainan Province\, China’s only tropical island\, became China’s largest Free Trade Zone. Often referred to as the “Hawaii of the Orient”\, Hainan is not only the world’s most dynamic tourism destination with a projected 80 million Chinese domestic visitors alone in 2021 but also the largest “lab” of the latest sustainable development experiment of the Chinese government. \nThanks to close collaborations with our friends at Arizona State University\, USHCA is bringing a diverse set of experts to provide an introductory overview of Hainan province\, its vision for a green and sustainable future\, and business opportunities related to Free Trade Port and Free Trade Zone promotional incentives. \nThis event is part of USHCA’s ongoing series\, The Way Forward\, where we discuss different ideas and initiatives used by the US and China and how they can be applied to the Heartland region. \nFor more information\, speaker bios and to register… \nSkip straight to registration.
